4 Steps for perfect nails

Fabulous nails are well worth the time and money needed to get them. Of course, the definition of fabulous can vary. For some people, a fabulous set of nails is a beautiful work of wearable art! For others, the most fabulous nail are well-groomed nails that are practical for all day wear. But regardless of your definition, taking the time get great nails can be both relaxing and rejuvenating.
However, regular visits to the beautician can get both time consuming and tough on the wallet. Fortunately, picking up an at-home nail kit allows us to give ourselves manicures whenever we want or need it! But it can be daunting to get started. Fear not, we are here to help!

Step 1: Get the right nail kit

Nail kit
Your nail kit does not have to be expensive, but they do need to include all the basics. The basic tools are 1) nail clipper, 2) nail file, and 3) cuticle pusher. The basic five piece nail kit will contain all the tools with added tweezers and nail scissors for extra precision and function. Outside of the kit, you’ll need to grab some hand and nail moisturiser, and if you want some colour, nail polish with a base coat and clear top coat. Lastly, if you already have previously applied nail polish, you’ll need some nail-polish remover.

Step 2: Prepare hands and nails

Nail kit tools
Remove previously applied nail polish if necessary. Then cut and shape nails. Any decent nail kit will have a good pair of nail clippers. The quality of a pair of nail clippers is determined by how well they are built and how sharp the blades are. Dull and poorly build Clippers will leave your nails with annoying, jagged edges. While jagged nails can be filed smooth, your clippers should be good enough to clip your nails cleanly. If you want a more precise cut, we recommend nail scissors which are a standard inclusion in most nail kits.

Nail file
Once you have cut your nails down to your preferred length, use your nail kit file to smooth and shape your nail. Do not use any files that might come attached to the nail clipper. They are usually of an inferior quality and also, annoying and frustrating to use. Good nail kits come with great nail files.

Step 3: Soak and attend to cuticles

Soak your hands in a bowl of warm soapy water. This is an essential step before cuticle care. It is also the most relaxing step of the process. So put on some music and just relax! Once you feel your cuticles are sufficiently soaked, use your nail kit’s cuticle pusher to push back the cuticle skins away from your nail. Some people recommend cutting the loose cuticle skin at this point. However, this is dangerous as it opens the door to infection of the nail bed. As such, we only recommend general tidying of dry, flaky skin but nothing more.

Step 4: Moisturise!

Now your hands and nail are ready to be messaged with rich creamy or silky oil moisturiser! At this point, you can stop or push ahead with applying some colour to your nails. Congratulations on your fabulous nails!
